Misty's Story
Misty’s journey is one of resilience, healing, and hope.
Like her siblings Canyon, Star, and April, Misty began life feral and vulnerable, living deep in Butte County at the Nimshew Gold Mine at the bottom of the canyon.
When she was rescued, Misty was malnourished and struggling to survive. By her side was her son, Robbie, who was in the same fragile condition. But with patience, compassion, and tender loving care, Misty’s life began to change. She regained her strength, learned to trust, and discovered that people could be a source of kindness and safety.
Over time, Misty blossomed into a gentle and loving companion, especially with children. She has a special gift for connecting with them, and she truly seems to thrive in their presence. The affection she receives from children — and the love she returns — has become one of the most beautiful parts of her story.
Love was the greatest teacher in Misty’s life. It helped her understand that humans were there to help, not harm. Though she was full of spirit — much like her brother Canyon — she also carried a joyful heart, running freely around the ranch and playing with her herd mates.
In early 2026, at 20 years old, Misty’s purpose was renewed when the ranch reopened to children. After seven long years of inactivity following the 2018 Paradise Camp Fire, she had been left without the work she loved. But she never forgot what she had learned. The moment she had the chance, she stepped back into her role with grace and heart.
Today, Misty is once again doing what she loves most: helping teach children, sharing her gentle spirit, and receiving the love she has always deserved. Her story is a powerful reminder that with care, patience, and compassion, healing is possible — and purpose can return even after the hardest seasons
